Core linguistic computations: How are they expressed in the mind/brain?

چکیده

Over the last half century, linguists have introduced very detailed formalmodels of languageknowledge, acquisition anduse, andhave proposed refined typologies of the kinds of mental computations involved in language. Thesemodels, in turn, captureand systematize observations and ideas developed in centuries of rational reflections on language. It is in the mutual interest of both linguists and cognitive neuroscientists to bridge the gap betweenmind and brain in this domain, andmake substantial progress in connecting abstract models of linguistic competence and performance, and the study of the neural implementation of the computing mechanisms. In this paper I would like to offer a concise tutorial on some core ideas and analytic devices introduced in formal linguistics to deal with linguistic computations and language variation, with special reference to parametric and minimalist models. Then, I would like to conclude by phrasing some questions that current ideas on mental linguistic computations raise for the brain sciences. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Language, Music, and Brain

By 1980, the study of brain-language relationships was based on the study of human brain damage. But since 1980, neuroscience methods have greatly improved. There is controversy about where music, composition, or the perception of language and music are in the brain, or wheth...

Neuro-ACT Cognitive Architecture Applications in Modeling Driver’s Steering Behavior in Turns

Cognitive Architectures (CAs) are the core of artificial cognitive systems. A CA is supposed to specify the human brain at a level of abstraction suitable for explaining how it achieves the functions of the mind. Over the years a number of distinct CAs have been proposed by different authors and their limitations and potentials were investigated. These CAs are usually classified as symbolic and...
